Frozen Shoulder

When a patient gets into a physical therapy program within 24 hours of their injury,
over 95% will be able to return to normal activities in 3-5 days.

Real Life Story

Last December I started feeling tightness, pain, and pinching in my shoulder. Around January I saw a Doctor who referred me to a physical therapy clinic in the hospital. I did not have much success and I was very discouraged. I was not making any progress. I went back to the Doctor and underwent a shoulder manipulation. After the manipulation my shoulder was still very tight and painful. Not until I went to Orrock/Mendenhall Sports Medicine did I start to see progress. I received plenty of one-on-one time with the therapists who worked on my shoulder. It was hard work at first, but it was all worth it. I am almost back to 100% and I am very thankful for their help.

Adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder, is a very common problem we see and treat in our physical therapy offices. Adhesive capsulitis affects women more than men and occurs in the fifth, sixth and seventh decades of life. The causes vary from immobilization after rotator cuff surgery or a proximal humeral fracture to an unknown viral or bacterial cause. Inflammation in the joint causes thrombin and fibrinogen to form a protein called fibrin. This protein causes clotting when in the blood and forms a sticky substance when found in the joint. This causes the folds in the articular capsule to stick together and inhibits full motion of the joint.

At Orrock/Mendenhall Sports Medicine, we see the importance of spending critical one-on-one time with our patients in order to perform glenohumeral joint mobilizations. Functional therapy is also emphasized to help the patient perform life-like activities. Our goal is to return the patient/client to their activity/sport as quickly and safely as possible.

To maximize your chances for optimal recovery, often a physician will suggest you consult with us to evaluate and modify your treatment and exercises to meet your specific needs.
