Jumper’s Knee

Signs and symptoms:

  • Pain and tenderness on the patellar tendon (just below the knee cap)
  • Increase in pain with repetitive jumping and landing activities
  • Muscle weakness of the quadriceps (thigh muscles)
  • Pain with going up and down stairs
  • Possible catching sensation of the knee
  • Mild swelling

Injury Description:

  • Jumper’s knee is inflammation of the patellar tendon and occasionally the quadriceps tendon. This condition is caused by repetitive jumping and landing activities such as basketball, volleyball, and some track and field events. These activities cause microtrauma to the tendon. This is caused by repetitive motions as well as extensive practice and playing sessions. Doing too much too soon is also a common cause of jumper’s knee.
  • This type of condition seldom disappears without either modifying activities and / or treatment.

What Can I Do?

  • Rest is important to allow the tissue time to repair its self. If rest is not possible due to activities which must be participated in, modification of these activities is necessary.
  • Applying an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes following activity will help to reduce the effects of inflammation that activity will cause. The ice will also help decrease the pain. An ice massage is also very effective. Freeze water in a paper cup then tear the paper back and rub the ice over the painful area for 10 minutes.
  • Heat prior to activity is also very helpful. Heat increases the blood flow to the area and prepares the tissue for activity. Heat should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes as close to activity as possible.
  • Stretching the muscles of the thigh and lower leg will also help prepare
